Yes Boss, There is a Santa Clause...
yep the dreaded question was spoken at the dinner table at The Shoe! Fortunately it was at the dinner table and I could convince my 6 year old first grader that then was not the time to discuss it. She simply stated that some of her classmates don't think Santa Clause is real. I changed the subject.

It is very sad that some children aren't allowed to continue to believe in the magic of Santa Claus. I have a delightful story about my daughter and Santa, but it is too long to put on your blog comments. I'll make it a post on my own in a few days. Suffice it to say that I think children should be allowed to enjoy the fantasy for as long as they wish. Young minds are developing, and fantasy is a huge part of their learning process. That is why they play pretend games!! DUH!! To take that away from them is a form of mental abuse; it stunts the normal development of the child's brain. "Pretend, "fantasy," "made up' are all part of learning to expand one's brain and consequently one's world. Those who deprive a child of that period actually do a disservice. Would a healthy parent stop a child from playing "make believe"? NO!! That is (1) practice for tasks of growing up, (2) expanding the child's brain to "think out of the box."
Let you kids enjoy the fantasy while they can. Life is cruel enough without taking away fun things like that.
And in response to tammy's question about why kids need to share these things . . . probably because they haven't developed enough to understand that shattering someone else's dreams doesn't make themselves feel better. It's one of the sad things about us . . . we keep trying to level the fields by dragging others down with us rather than aspiring to reach a better place. Sad.
Gahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...la la la la la (singing and plugging my ears)...I want to believe that my girls will always believe in Santa.
P.S. I ruined Santa for my cousin...I got in big trouble for that.
Oh and the reason I did was because I was so proud of myself that I drew conclusions (i.e. every year my dad was gone when Santa came to my grandma's and Santa kinda looked like my dad) that I had to share it with someone...did I mention that I got in big trouble for it?
OH no! I'm glad you fixed the situation :)
